THE SOCIAL JUSTICE LEAGUE
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
This comic book cover page was drawn and colored for a Women's Studies: Introduction to Feminism course. The professor chose this piece out of all her classes as the 2015 cover for her annual anthology of student-created artwork, poetry, and prose.
As a fan of comic books, I wanted to envision a graphic novel that neither objectifies nor marginalizes women. My goal was to subvert the rampant misogyny seen in comics by celebrating queer icons from the music industry. I thus drew inspiration from real-life heroes like JD Samson, Beth Ditto, Robyn, and Big Freedia.
In a market saturated by "White Guy vs. White Dude," I believe comic creators and consumers alike are ready to tell more than a single story. With "The Social Justice League," I assert my belief that a comic which champions the ability of heroic women (and their allies) to fight for independence, equity, and respect is a story worth telling.
